The Hobo Bag Is Back, and Le Tanneur Gets It Right

Some bags immediately make sense to me, and the Céleste from Le Tanneur is one of them. It’s simple, it’s roomy, it has that slightly slouchy hobo shape that gives off a feeling of looking put together but not even trying, and, most importantly, it looks like a bag you would actually use.

I have a soft spot for a good everyday bag. As much as I love a tiny, highly impractical bag that fits approximately one lipstick and a prayer, there is something very satisfying about a bag that can hold your things without looking like you packed for a weekend away. And I love a casual bag. I love something I can fling things into, then fling over my shoulder and go.

As a Le Tanneur fan (my review of my beloved Emie that I now have in multiple sizes), I am happy to see that the Céleste hits that sweet spot.

The Details

The Céleste measures 13″ H x 9.8″ W x 6.7″ D, so it has plenty of room without feeling oversized. The shape is soft and curved, but there is enough structure to keep it from becoming one of those bags where the bottom folds in and sinks together. It has a zip closure, one interior slip pocket, and an adjustable, detachable handle, so you can wear it comfortably over your shoulder.

And then there is the leather. The Céleste is made from smooth, full-grain calfskin, which gives it that really beautiful, almost silky look that makes a simple bag feel much more elevated. The Brown Arabica color I chose is especially good because it has a rich, warm brown tone that pairs well with just about everything. It feels very fall, but honestly, I would carry this color year-round.

What I really like about this bag, though, is that it doesn’t try too hard.

There is no giant logo, no complicated hardware, no unnecessary detail competing for attention. The silver-tone hardware is subtle, the handle has a belt-inspired look, and the construction gives the bag enough interest that it doesn’t need much else. Le Tanneur calls the Céleste a timeless hobo, and I think that is exactly what makes it appealing. It feels current without looking like it was designed specifically to be “the bag of the moment.”

That is something I find myself appreciating more and more when it comes to handbags.

We have seen so many micro trends come and go that sometimes I just want a really good bag. One that looks great with jeans and a sweater, but also works when I am dressed up. One that can come with me to lunch, to work, to school pickup, or wherever else the day happens to take me. One that I don’t have to baby. The Céleste feels like that kind of bag.
