The Balenciaga Hourglass Bag Just Got Even Cooler

The Balenciaga Hourglass bag made its debut in 2019, introduced as part of creative director Demna’s Fall 2019 collection. It introduced a sleeker, less in-your-face direction for the brand, which previously relied on loud logos and streetwear-inspired silhouettes.

The Hourglass bag, which takes its name from the unique, curved shape of the bag, struck the perfect balance of modern and classic, immediately becoming a hit and a favorite of celebrities and the fashion crowd alike.

Now, seven years after its initial debut, the Hourglass is proving its staying power, given a brand-new refresh for the Fall 2026 season—and we are already obsessed.

The Hourglass Shape Has Always Been Balenciaga

The hourglass figure has remained integral to Balenciaga’s heritage since couturier Cristóbal Balenciaga first referenced the shape in his Summer 1943 collection. The hourglass silhouette originally appeared as tailored suits with coordinating peplumed jackets. These suits were highly structured, with a fitted bodice that emphasized the hip, creating the distinct hourglass curve that Cristóbal Balenciaga would explore in his work for years to come.

In later years, the distinct silhouette of an hourglass would inspire the work of those who came after the House’s founder, emphasized within ready-to-wear and, of course, accessories. The original Hourglass bag, with its unique, sculpted base, echoed the original conceptual design created by Cristóbal Balenciaga all those years ago, and this season, the silhouette is reinvented once again with the Hourglass Avenue.

A Softer Take on the Iconic Hourglass

The new Balenciaga Hourglass Avenue bag forges a new era for Balenciaga, a continuation of creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli’s vision for the House. The bag debuted as part of Piccioli’s sophomore collection for Balenciaga. Featuring the same innovative and entirely distinct lines as the original Hourglass, but with a softer, more relaxed silhouette, the Hourglass Avenue melds chic sophistication with Balenciaga’s enduring edge, all while paying a quiet homage to the House’s rich heritage.

Though softer and more relaxed, the Hourglass Avenue is designed to keep its shape, fitted with two handles that allow the bag’s look to completely transform. When worn closed and carried by one top handle, the bag feels more refined. Carrying the bag open and in a more relaxed way reveals a second handle.

The Details That Make the Hourglass Avenue

The Balenciaga Hourglass Avenue bag is defined by its magnetic lock closure, which is discreetly engraved with an address—10 Avenue George V—the historic location of Cristóbal Balenciaga’s Paris ateliers, which remain the House’s headquarters still to this day.

The bag, which is crafted from shiny box calfskin and finished with aged-gold hardware, arrives in two sizes, small ($2,690) and medium ($2,990), available now in boutiques and on Balenciaga.com.
