Jordan Brand Expands The Space Jam Universe With A Massive Collection
Thirty years after Space Jam arrived in theaters, Jordan Brand is celebrating one of the most important intersections of basketball, sneakers, and pop culture in its history. The 1996 film helped immortalize the Air Jordan 11, creating a legacy that has endured through generations of sneakerheads and basketball fans.
The annual Holiday Air Jordan 11 has historically been the company’s most important release of the year, drawing enormous crowds to malls every December and generating demand that few other sneakers could match. However, the current landscape is considerably different. Air Jordan Retros are no longer the guaranteed sellouts they once were, and the abundance of archival releases has seemingly diminished the urgency that once surrounded the Jumpman.
That makes the return of the Air Jordan 11 “Space Jam” particularly consequential, but if any Jordan Retro can still recreate the excitement of the brand’s glory days, it’s this one.
Jordan Brand certainly isn’t treating the occasion lightly. What initially began as a two-shoe project eventually expanded into a 12-SKU collection that explores the film’s characters, production, and mythology in ways that go far beyond the familiar black-and-blue sneakers. Sneaker News was invited to preview a sample of the full collection while also geting a first look at unreleased and earlier concepts.

These pairs are being produced only for a select audience, including Warner Bros. executives, Jordan Brand higher-ups, and Friends & Family. A public release is not happening.

The design was intended to capture the outer-space setting of Space Jam, taking a more literal approach to the movie’s science-fiction themes. While the concept was ultimately scrapped, it offers a glimpse at how far Jordan Brand considered taking the anniversary collection beyond the familiar black-and-blue colorway. This sample will not release to the public due to high costs of production.

Although the concept made it to the sample stage, this particular kids’ execution was ultimately left out of the retail lineup. It’s another example of the different directions considered as the anniversary project expanded beyond its original scope.

Its iridescent exterior recreates the supernatural ball’s color-shifting appearance, while black covers the midsole and the interior. This version translates a fictional prop into a distinctly different take on Michael Jordan’s eleventh signature shoe. The Air Jordan 11 “Space Jam” returns in its unmistakable black and Varsity Royal colorway, with Jordan Brand placing particular emphasis on recreating the original details. The most recent 2016 release chose a Concord shade, but long-time fans know that the first 2000 release as well as the ground-breaking 2009 Retro stuck with Varsity Royal.
Further details along with the true-to-original build is the correctly oriented Jumpman logo and the “JUMPMAN JAM” lettering across the tongue tie-bar. While the surrounding collection explores new interpretations of the movie, Jordan Brand has wisely kept its most important sneaker faithful to the version fans remember.
This 30th Anniversary Air Jordan 11 “Space Jam” will release on December 12th in full family sizes at Jordan retailers worldwide.
