For Balenciaga Spring 2027, Pierpaolo Piccioli Explores Couture for Every Day

Balenciaga is, first and foremost, a couture House. Founded in 1917 by Cristóbal Balenciaga, the House operated strictly as a couture House until its namesake founder retired and shuttered its doors in 1968.

Balenciaga Reimagines Its Couture Codes

It wasn’t until the brand relaunched under new ownership in 1986 that ready-to-wear was introduced. Still, couture remains at the center of the Balenciaga brand, with everything from ready-to-wear and shoes to handbags inspired by the House’s couture codes.

Pierpaolo Piccioli’s first couture collection for Balenciaga was presented earlier this year, marking the House’s 55th Balenciaga couture collection. Designed as an homage to the art of feeling, the collection paid tribute to the many hands involved in creating couture—those of the past and those of the present—with nods to the House’s founder present throughout.

Pierpaolo Piccioli Brings Couture to the Everyday

Now, for his second Spring collection for Balenciaga, Piccioli explores couture for the everyday, taking techniques from his first couture collection and reimagining them for daily life. Items once deemed standard or mundane are explored through a couture lens, with a focus on cut and construction.

The classic white button-down is given a new hourglass shape, emphasizing both form and function, while the classic T-shirt is viewed through a new lens, offering exaggerated proportions on an everyday item. One gorgeous example is a draped light pink T-shirt turned dress, complete with a dramatic, flowing train.

Elsewhere, tailoring techniques first employed during the couture collection are utilized to bring striking volumes and a distinct silhouette to leather and cotton pieces that reference archival silhouettes. What unifies the collection is the idea of the body as the basis for creation—a rule that Cristóbal Balenciaga instilled. While these ideals and the techniques used throughout have a centuries-old history, Piccioli looks at them through a new lens.

Balenciaga’s New Bags Blend Past and Present

As for the bags, this collection echoes the ready-to-wear, melding elements of the old and the new. Icons like the Balenciaga City bag appear alongside new shapes like the Nodo and the Silhou Tote. Like the ready-to-wear, both focus on construction, draped by hand to emphasize a fluid, organic feel reminiscent of couture draping.

This new knotted tote arrives in a range of colors and is seen in both soft leather and silk. Light lilac and periwinkle give way to burgundy, white and black, while mini iterations in bright neon hues offer a fun pop of color.
